As South Africa embraces the Blue Economy, and using water resources sustainably for growth and healthy ecosystems, Plastics SA plays a vital role in protecting our rivers, coastlines and marine environments. Plastics are often misunderstood, yet when managed responsibly, they help conserve resources, reduce waste, and build a cleaner, circular future CLEAN RIVERS, CLEAN OCEANS.

One of Plastics SA’s most successful environmental programmes is the River Catchment Project, implemented across five provinces: KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

The initiative intercepts litter before it reaches fragile coastal ecosystems using innovative litter booms: floating barriers that collect plastic waste without disturbing fish or birdlife. Working with partners such as Durban Green Corridor and the East Coast Recycling Partnership, Plastics SA prevents pollution at its source while educating local communities about protecting these vital waterways.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Plastics SA believes real change begins with awareness and skills development. Through training and partnerships with municipalities, collectors and buy-back centres, the organisation empowers communities to reduce pollution, improve waste collection, and find end markets for recyclables.
This approach not only safeguards the environment but also creates jobs and strengthens the circular economy.

MUNICIPAL AND CLEAN-UP SUPPORT

Plastics SA works closely with municipalities to train waste collectors and officials in sustainable waste management. The organisation also equips community cleanup teams nationwide with clean-up bags, as well as spades, rakes, gloves, overalls and gumboots, thereby ensuring they have the tools and safety gear needed to make a lasting difference.

INNOVATION FOR A CIRCULAR FUTURE

Through innovation and collaboration, Plastics SA continues to drive projects that improve plastic recovery, recycling and reuse, proving that plastics can be part of the solution to a cleaner planet.
By protecting rivers and oceans, empowering people, and promoting responsible plastic use, Plastics SA is helping South Africa move toward a sustainable, inclusive Blue Economy.
